7 Mistakes You’re Making with Laser Hair Removal (and Why Your North East Results Aren’t Lasting)
Share
Let’s be honest: we’ve all been there. You see a "too good to be true" deal for laser hair removal on a local Facebook group or a discount site, you book in, and six sessions later... you’re still reaching for the razor every morning. It’s frustrating, it’s expensive, and it makes you wonder if laser hair removal is actually the "permanent" solution everyone claims it to be.
At HL Medical Aesthetics & Training in Darlington, I see clients every week who come to us after "failed" treatments elsewhere in the North East. Usually, the issue isn't the client’s hair, it’s a combination of the technology being used and a few common mistakes made during the process.
If you want to ditch the razor for good and actually get the smooth skin you’re paying for, you need to avoid these seven common pitfalls. Here is why your results might be stalling and how we do things differently here.
1. Falling for the "Cheap" Tech Trap
The biggest mistake happens before you even step into the clinic. Not all lasers are created equal. Many salons in the North East use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) rather than medical-grade lasers. While IPL can reduce hair, it isn't a true laser. It’s a broad spectrum of light that is less targeted and often less effective, especially on stubborn or deeper follicles.
At HL Medical, we use the SMARTDiode, which is widely regarded as some of the best technology in the UK. It’s a medical-grade diode laser that targets the follicle with precision while keeping the surrounding skin safe and cool. If you’ve had 10 sessions of IPL and the hair is still there, it’s likely the tech, not you.

2. Plucking or Waxing Between Sessions
This is a golden rule we preach to every client who walks through our doors. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle. When you wax, pluck, or thread, you are pulling the hair out by the root.
If there is no root, the laser has nothing to target. You’re essentially firing a laser at an empty hole, which is a complete waste of your session. You must stick to shaving only. Shaving leaves the follicle intact beneath the surface, allowing our SMARTDiode to do its job. For more tips on preparing for your visit, check out our first aesthetic treatment guide.
3. Ignoring the "Sun Trap"
We live in the North East, so we take the sun whenever we can get it! However, your laser results (and your safety) depend on you being careful with UV exposure.
A tan, whether it’s from a weekend in Seaton Carew or a fortnight in Ibiza, increases the melanin in your skin. Because lasers target melanin, a tan makes it harder for the laser to distinguish between your hair and your skin. This significantly increases the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation. You should avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before and after your treatment. If you’ve been out in the sun, please tell us! We value your safety above everything else.
4. The Fake Tan Faux Pas
This is a huge one for our Middlesbrough and Darlington regulars. We love a glow, but fake tan is a massive "no-go" for laser hair removal. Self-tanners contain pigments that sit on the surface of the skin. Just like a real tan, these pigments can confuse the laser, leading to ineffective treatments or, worse, skin damage.
You need to be completely "tan-free" for your appointment. This means exfoliating thoroughly to ensure every scrap of bottled bronze is gone. We want to see your natural skin tone so we can calibrate our medical-grade equipment for the best possible results.

5. Inconsistency and Skipping the Growth Cycles
Laser hair removal isn't a "one and done" situation. Our hair grows in different stages: Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). The laser only works on hair in the Anagen phase.
At any given time, only a percentage of your hair is in this phase. This is why you need a full course of treatments, usually 6 to 12 sessions, spaced specifically apart. If you miss an appointment or wait too long between sessions, you miss that window of opportunity. Consistency is the key to moving from "patchy" to "permanent." If you're looking for laser hair removal in Darlington, make sure you're ready to commit to the schedule.
6. Poor Post-Treatment Aftercare
What you do after you leave the clinic is just as important as the treatment itself. For 24–48 hours after your session, your hair follicles are sensitive and holding onto heat.
The biggest mistakes we see?
- Hot showers and saunas: Adding more heat to the area can cause irritation or even blistering. Keep it cool!
- The Gym: Heavy sweating can irritate the treated follicles. It’s a great excuse to take a rest day.
- Scratching or picking: You might see "shedding" where the dead hairs push out of the skin. Let them fall out naturally. Picking can lead to scarring.
7. Not Disclosing Your Medical History
As a Nurse Practitioner-led clinic, I cannot stress this enough. Certain medications and health conditions make your skin "photosensitive," meaning it reacts much more intensely to light.
Whether it’s antibiotics, certain acne medications, or even some herbal supplements, we need to know. At HL Medical, we pride ourselves on clinical safety. We aren't just "beauticians" pressing a button; we are medical professionals who understand the science behind the treatment. This clinical oversight is why our results are lasting and our clients feel safe. You can read more about why aesthetic clinic regulations are changing in 2026 and why choosing a medical professional matters now more than ever.
