7 Mistakes You’re Making With Laser Hair Removal in the North East (And How to Fix Them)
Share
Let’s be honest: we’ve all been there. You’ve spent years battling stubborn stubble, nursing razor burn, and dealing with the literal pain of waxing, only to decide that enough is enough. You want permanent results. You want to wake up, get dressed, and head out the door without a second thought about whether you missed a spot on your ankles.
But here’s the thing: laser hair removal isn't a "one-size-fits-all" treatment. In our Darlington clinic, we see so many clients who come to us frustrated because they’ve "tried laser before" and it just didn't work. Usually, it isn't because their hair is "too stubborn"; it’s because of a few common pitfalls that are surprisingly easy to fall into.
If you’re looking for laser hair removal in the North East, we want you to get the results you're paying for. Here are the 7 biggest mistakes we see people making and, more importantly, exactly how to fix them.
1. Falling for the "Cheap Tech" Trap (IPL vs. Laser)
The biggest mistake is often made before you even step into the treatment room. Many high-street salons in the North East offer "laser" hair removal that isn't actually laser at all: it's IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).
While IPL can be great for some skin concerns, it’s like using a flashlight when you need a spotlight. It uses a broad spectrum of light that scatters, making it less effective at reaching the deep-rooted follicles. At HL Medical Aesthetics & Training, we use the SMARTDiode system. This is a medical-grade diode laser that targets the follicle with clinical precision.
The Fix: Always ask if the machine is a "Diode Laser" or "IPL." For permanent hair reduction that actually lasts, medical-grade tech is the gold standard.

2. Plucking, Waxing, or Threading Between Sessions
This is the hardest habit to break! When you see those few stray hairs popping up between appointments, your instinct is to grab the tweezers. Stop right there.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair root. If you pluck or wax, you are removing the root entirely. When you come in for your next session, the laser has no target to "hit," making the treatment a waste of time.
The Fix: Put the tweezers down! You can: and should: shave between sessions. Shaving keeps the root intact under the skin, allowing the laser to do its job effectively.
3. The "Sun Trap" and Fake Tan Faux Pas
We all love a North East summer (when it finally arrives!), but sun exposure and laser hair removal are a dangerous mix. Sun exposure increases melanin in your skin, which can confuse the laser and lead to burns or hyperpigmentation.
Similarly, fake tan is a major "no-go." Because the laser is looking for pigment, it can’t distinguish between the "tan" sitting on your skin and the hair follicle.
The Fix: Avoid active sun exposure for at least two weeks before and after your treatment. If you’re a fake tan fan, make sure you have exfoliated every last trace of it off at least 48 hours before you arrive at our Darlington clinic.
4. Inconsistency with Your Appointments
Laser hair removal is a journey, not a destination. Your hair grows in three distinct phases: Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). The laser can only destroy the follicle when the hair is in the Anagen phase.
Since only about 15-20% of your hair is in this phase at any given time, you need a full course of 6 to 12 sessions, spaced specifically to catch every hair as it enters the growth stage. Skipping an appointment or waiting too long between sessions gives the follicles time to recover.
The Fix: Commit to the process. We usually recommend sessions every 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 8 weeks for the body. Consistency is the secret to that "silky smooth" feeling.

5. Poor Pre-Treatment Preparation
Some people think they need to show up with visible hair so the practitioner can "see what they’re doing." In reality, this is counterproductive. If the hair is long, the laser energy is wasted on the hair above the skin, which can cause surface burns and more discomfort.
The Fix: Shave the area cleanly about 24 hours before your session. This ensures the laser energy travels straight down the hair shaft to the root where it's needed most. Plus, it makes the treatment much more comfortable!
6. Neglecting Your Aftercare
After a session with the SMARTDiode, your follicles are essentially holding onto a lot of heat. They are sensitive and need a little TLC. A common mistake is heading straight to a hot yoga class, a sauna, or taking a steaming hot shower right after an appointment. This can lead to irritation, bumps, or even blistering.
The Fix: For 24–48 hours post-treatment, keep it cool. Avoid heavy exercise (sweating), hot tubs, and harsh exfoliants. Stick to lukewarm showers and a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if needed.
7. Choosing a "Beauty Salon" over a "Clinical Setting"
Aesthetics is a serious business. When you are dealing with high-powered medical lasers, you want to know you are in safe hands. Many people choose a provider based on price alone, without checking the credentials of the practitioner.
At HL Medical Aesthetics, our clinic is led by Hayley Lamb, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. This medical background means we prioritize safety, clinical standards, and a deep understanding of skin anatomy above all else. We don’t just "zap" hair; we assess your medical history and skin type to ensure the safest, most effective results possible.
The Fix: Do your research. Check for CPD-accredited training and medical qualifications. A professional clinic will always require a patch test and a full consultation before you start.
